Stopping out of necessity

The socks are no more (well, the yarn is back in my stash). I frogged them because knitting on them made my hands hurt. I’m not entirely sure what happened but sometimes the needles are too small for the yarn and it turns everything into a struggle. I didn’t get a picture of it but I got through the heel before giving up.

I do love the pattern.

For a change of pace (and some quick gratification) I knit a small toy for a friend’s baby. It’s the Lucky Duckling pattern by Claire Garland. She makes the most adorable stuffed animals. I’m not the best at sewing so the picture has the seam strategically out of sight.

He’s knit in Valley Yarns Valley Superwash DK in grey and squash with some Rowan Kidsilk Haze as some additional color to the body.

For a less instant project I’ve started Tranquil Night by Makenzie Alvarez. I picked up some Black Elephant Silky Sock from my local yarn store (Warm ‘n Fuzzy) and started pretty much immediately upon getting home. But I’ve hit a snag. I’ve practiced my brioche but for some reason every time I start this project it doesn’t look right. On Saturday a friend and I went to the local weaving guild (my friend just got a new loom) then another yarn store called Freeman’s Creative. I showed them my attempt and they had some instructions for me on how to fix it. It does mean restarting entirely but I wasn’t satisfied with how it was turning out so I’m happy to go back and do it properly. Isn’t having a local source of knowledge the best? I don’t think I would’ve figured this one out without some intervention.

My first attempt. At least I’m happy with the colors.

  1. The sock pattern is lovely, but I fully endorse stopping a pattern that isn’t sparking joy, for whatever reason.

  2. Too bad about the socks. It’s a great pattern. A brioche sweater is in my queue but I need to practice before taking on such a big project. I have to learn how to fix mistakes.

  3. That’s such a shame about those socks – they looked beautiful and you got so far – but if it doesn’t feel right, frogging is better than banishing them to the WIP basket to stare at you until the end of days (like I do lol). Knowing when to call it a day is a great thing that I wish I could do more often.

The duck is very cute! I love Claire Garland’s patterns.

  4. That little duck is absolutely adorable! And it looks like your brioche is off to a good start now that you’ve gotten on the right track. I do hope you reuse that sock yarn – it’s too pretty not to!
