Rocket Girl – Starry Night Roving Review

The new job has gotten busy so my knitting progress has slowed down again. I’m told it was be busy for 2-3 more weeks then it will begin to calm down as people get used to the system. I know it’s just a temp job but I’m really enjoying the work (I like working with customers! It’s satisfying to find ways to make them happy!) and they seem to like the work I’m able to produce.

Since I’m so busy with work I just have a review of some, in progress, roving I picked up recently. The review is for Rocket Girl Roving in the Starry night colorway.

Rocket Girl LabelI picked this up because I liked the softly muted colors. My wardrobe is also pretty neutral so I was hoping this would fit right in once I figured out a project for it.

Jewel tones are nice but sometimes your eyes need some calming!

The brand itself is local to the area (which may explain why I can’t find the brand anywhere online) and I want local products to thrive so please keep the importance of supporting local artists in mind as you read my review. Also keep in mind that I’m not you. Don’t let a review stop you from discovering something new.

Starry Night - VM

At this point I realize I missed some hay but I’ve also given up. I just want this yarn over with and have stopped caring about perfectly consistent yarn.

I don’t like working with this roving. The colors are pretty and I think it will ply together in an interesting way but the roving itself has problems. I have to stop frequently to pick out veggie matter and the fiber itself is full of random lumps.

Starry Night - Nupps

The lumps make it difficult to spin properly and I’m afraid they’ll have the effect of pills on a sweater. There are just too many of them to pick out. I’m continuing with the hope that the finished product will have an art yarn feel but when I sit down to spin I’m left feeling frustrated and like a hobby I love has been turned into work. I want to finish this yarn and move on.

Will I continue spinning with this roving long enough to have a finished product? I don’t know. If I saw this roving again would I pick it up? Again, I don’t know. I think if I saw it again I would inspect carefully to see if maybe this was just a one time unfortunate batch – in which case I would want to try again. BUT if I do see evidence of these same issues I would probably just avoid the brand altogether.

Now if Rocket Girl has finished yarn in this color I would (after inspecting carefully) happily pick some up.
