The 2013-14 school year was my first year as an educator and the first year of operation for my school.
When I applied for the job I was still student teaching. My friend, the crocheter, already had a position lined up with the school and encouraged (see – forced) me to apply. In all actuality, I sent her my resume and cover letter to proof and she just forwarded it on as my application. She was also my recommendation. There were concerns about my inexperience all across the board but after long discussion (and some bumps in the middle) I was offered the position and accepted.
I never expected this year to be easy or go smoothly and it didn’t. But! I also didn’t end up leaving the profession. The first year in teaching is trial by fire. My mentor, boss, and fellow teachers told me over and over that my job was simply to survive. They also told me I did an excellent job (especially for a first year). With nothing to compare my year to I have no choice but to believe them and to accept the complement. I can only hope that next year I continue to do an excellent job.
I could not have done it without everyone who helped support me.
My first year teaching may be finished but the Evenstar shawl is a work in progress. I have about 50 rows before starting the edge (which will also take ages because of those beads). The hope is that I’ll finish before Hubby and I leave for our honeymoon in 10 days. Even as I type this I realize there is no way it’s going to happen.
Dream big.
